The 4A High School Cross Country Region 1 Championships were Friday, Oct. 24. Twelve teams competed, including the Steamboat Sailors. The girls took 5th overall at regionals. Emerald Weber was the top Steamboat finisher at 13th. She’ll advance to the state championships Saturday in Colorado Springs. The Steamboat Springs boys finished 9th overall.
From SSHS Head Coach Lisa Renee Tumminello: “Our ladies who fought for the team score – Evie Fisher and Whitney Warnke (who were 19th and 20th and in striking distance of the State Championship qualification), Ayla Oslowski, Miya Lippuner, Lily Garey, Davis Brosterhous, Carson Dressendorfer, and Gigi Lobeck.”
For the boys, Tumminello added, “In a championship race where most of the athletes are upper classman, it is exciting to see our young athletes step in with courage and confidence. We especially want to congratulate Gavin Hendricks on his 21st place finish, which is so close to an individual qualification of top 15 to State Championships. And Conor Devin, Sawyer Landers, Bodes Rhodes, Jaxon Shaw, Quinten Nance and Benji Langness had such a strong team finish. Also congratulations to Jacob Gonzales and Ryan Becker for racing forward to displace other team athletes.”
The Class 3A Regionals were Friday at Loudy Simpson Park in Craig, where 12 teams also competed. The Moffat County Boys took first place. Individually, Haven Carr of Moffat County finished 2nd, Jonas Pressgrove was 6th, Zachary Womble was 9th, and Dominic Gross was 13th. For the Moffat County girls, Sydney Wattles made the podium at 3rd.
