By Shannon Lukens.

Routt and Moffat counties are responding to the federal disruption of SNAP benefits. Full details in two press releases are below.

MOFFAT COUNTY

In Moffat County, more than 706 households totaling 1,313 individuals may see a delay in receiving their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

Moffat County Department of Human Services is partnering with Yampa Valley Community Foundation and Love Inc., to help provide gift cards for those eligible for SNAP benefits in Moffat County. This is through a philanthropic private donation of $115,000.

Gift cards are expected to be available this Thursday or Friday, Nov. 6-7. Moffat County HHS is asking that people please call ahead to verify that the gift cards have been received, or check back on Moffat County Government’s social media post, before coming into the office. (970)824-8282.

From Yampa Valley Community Foundation:

Thank you to the many generous donors who donated to Yampa Valley Community Foundation in order to facilitate a grant to Love INC for the purchase of these grocery gift cards. In just four days, YVCF donors committed almost $120,000 to help fill the gap in the delay and reduced SNAP benefits for November in Moffat County.

Now more than ever, please consider supporting the organizations and programs that provide food security resources in our communities, including LiftUp of Routt County, Love INC of the Yampa Valley, United Way of the Yampa Valley and many local churches.

(Announcement letter below)

ROUTT COUNTY

Routt County is distributing SNAP cards through the Routt County Department of Human Services, starting Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 135 6th Street. Distribution will continue from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through Nov. 14.

Verification must be completed in person by a verified SNAP household member. Individuals need to be currently eligible for SNAP for the month of November, current eligibility and case status will be verified prior to providing food cards. Cards will be issued upon ID verification, and inventory will be tracked daily to prevent duplication. Households must sign an attestation agreeing to use the cards only for SNAP-eligible groceries. Gift card amounts are based on each household’s typical SNAP benefit, prorated for two weeks and rounded to the nearest $25.

Households with mobility or other barriers should reach out to Routt County Department of Human Services to arrange alternative solutions. Contact the Tech of the Day at 970-870-5280.

Should the shutdown continue beyond mid-November, the County will assess need and supply of additional grocery cards for the remaining half of the month. SNAP benefits are expected to be released once the shutdown concludes, and the County continues monitoring changes daily.

Ways to Help

If you are interested in supporting our community’s food security during this time, please remember that this is an important giving season for all nonprofits, and that additional support on top of regular giving is critical to maintain as well as enhance support for individuals and families as needs increase.

LiftUp of Routt County is the nexus of food security in Routt County, serving 1 out of 7 of our Routt County neighbors. Contributions of shelf-stable foods and USDA-processed proteins are always welcome, though financial contributions help support the purchase of higher quantities of very low-cost foods through the Food Bank’s existing purchasing partners.
