Prescribed burns will be conducted on Emerald Mountain in the next few months, as weather and fuel conditions permit. All burns will be led by the wildland crew with Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue. There will be a notice on the specific day of the burn and we will let you know, so residents to not call Routt County Dispatch.

Press Release from the City of Steamboat Springs; Dec. 2, 2025.

Emerald Mountain Prescribed Burns On Horizon

Several Burn Periods Anticipated Over Coming Months With Visible Smoke

Steamboat Springs, Colorado-December 2, 2025-Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR) is preparing to conduct several prescribed burns on Emerald Mountain over the coming months as weather and fuel conditions permit. These operations will involve burning multiple slash piles created during this summer’s wildfire mitigation work and will produce visible smoke in the area.

“We’re currently waiting for conditions to align,” said Deputy Fire Chief Ian Satterfield. “With shifting weather patterns in the weeks ahead, conditions are looking favorable for pile burning. We want residents to know this work may begin at any time. We’ll issue a notice the day of once a burn window has been confirmed.”

All burns will be led by SSFR’s wildland crew in coordination with Routt County Environmental Health to ensure air quality remains a top priority. Operations will only occur when ventilation conditions are rated good to excellent—or during active snowfall.

Piles will be monitored and chunked (the process of moving unburned material from the perimeter of a burn pile to the actively burning center) to achieve optimal consumption prior to natural extinguishment. The public is asked to avoid all active burn areas during operations.

Routt County Dispatch will be notified prior to ignition. SSFR asks the community not to call 911 to report smoke from this Emerald Mountain prescribed burn unless you see an unrelated emergency. For questions about the prescribed burns, please contact SSFR at 970-879-7170 between 8 am and 5 pm.
