A box of pipe bombs was detonated Tuesday night in Craig, by the Grand Junction Police Bomb Unit. The pipes were found in a metal box in the basement of the Barely Spent Consignment Store at 468 Ranney Street. Here’s Craig Police Chief Mike Cochran.
“No concern or danger to the community at this time. It is not something that we really see in this area. But it was handled relatively quick with no incident.”
Chief Cochran says the owner of the consignment store isn’t sure how long the box of pipe bombs had been in the basement, since he frequently buys things from estate sales and puts things down in the basement until he can go through them.
Chief Cochran says when he opened the box and saw what looked to be numerous homemade pipe bombs, he called 911 right away. That was at 4:47 p.m. Tuesday
Craig Police evacuated the building and called the Grand Junction Bomb Unit, which Chief Cochran says provides bomb support for many counties on the Western Slope.
The bomb unit was able to detonate the pipe bombs on the east side of Craig, at a gravel pit.
There were no injuries.
Chief Cochran says owner of the Barely Spent Thrift Store is closing the business.
