The Grand County Board of County Commissioners say the re-release of Wolf 2403 back to Grand County violated the Colorado Wolf Management Plan. The letter was sent today to Governor Polis. The letter says it was particularly alarming, considering the history of confirmed depredations of this particular wolf when it was part of the Copper Creek Pack.
The Grand County Commissioners want an explanation on why it happened, saying it, “further erodes the trust between the state, CPW, and the rural communities directly affected by this ‘re-introduction process.”

The family of Derek Pettigrew is helping raise money for Routt County Search and Rescue. They’ve put up a matching grant of $50,000 in an effort to raise over $100,000, through the Colorado Gives website.
22-year-old Derek Pettigrew, who grew up in Steamboat Springs went missing last July. His car was found a few miles from the Wyoming border, in Jackson County. Search teams, including Routt County Search and Rescue spent at least three days searching the area. Pettigrew was never found.
The parents of Derek posted more on the story about their son on the Colorado Gives site. It starts with, “Your son is going to kill himself, and there is nothing you can do.”
It ends with, “That is why we created this fund to honor Derek and the heroes of RCSAR. RCSAR depends on donations to continue its mission. They need gear, training, and resources to keep answering the call for families in crisis. To recognize their service, and to inspire others, the Pettigrew family will match the first 50k in contributions with a total goal of raising 100k+. Please, join us. Share this story. Support their work. Because one day, another family will find themselves with a loved one lost in the wilderness and RSCAR may be their only lifeline.”

The Yule Log was found early Wednesday morning, at Howelsen Hill near Adams Field, closer to the railroad tracks under a pine tree. A group from Steamboat Veterinary Hospital found it. Here’s Tammy Shupp.
“So yeah, it was exciting. It was exciting to be a part of it.”
Also with Tammy were her co-workers, Michaela Fogg, Kendal Paul, Jill Peters, and Lynne Romeo. It’s something Lynne loves to do every year because of the history.

“I just really like how people get excited about the history. We learn so much from each clue. It’s crazy. Stuff we had no idea that happened in Steamboat. And the other thing, Shannon, for a few days, we bring people back to life, our pioneers, and I feel when we’re out looking, I feel them.”
This was the 46th year for the Annual Yule Log Hunt, presented by the Tread of Pioneers Museum, along with F.M. Light Sons and the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association.
