From Mental Health Minute Organizers: This week we feature Yampa Valley High School as a high school option that provides a great opportunity for students who do not find a traditional high school option as one where they can thrive.  The prioritization for creating unique learning opportunities, college and career paths, and smaller settings allow for mental health to be a foundation for academic and personal success.  The student experience possibilities continue to evolve and allow for this school to serve students in very important and impactful ways.

Mental Health Minute

A student’s daily schedule can affect their mental health. The alternative high school in Steamboat Springs allows students to prioritize their mental health.

Here are quotes from Yampa Valley High School students explaining how YVHS has helped them…

“Because there are not as many people, that means there is less noise, making me feel less overwhelmed.”

“I feel accepted here, and so much less stressed. Everyone shows up for us and really cares.”

“Providing a therapist who works with me and can come and see me during school hours.”

“YVHS has helped me with becoming more social in class and asking questions when I don’t understand a subject.”

“The teachers are very understanding, and it’s clear they want what’s best for me. I deeply appreciate the support I have received from all of them.”

Yampa Valley High School students were asked:

How do you know when your mental health is declining…

“When my mental health is declining, I start getting extreme mood swings.”

“I get quieter and stay more isolated than usual.”

“If my mental health is declining, I feel unmotivated to do anything, always tired, and cold.”

How do you know when your mental health is improving…

“When I don’t care what people think of me.”

“If it’s improving, I feel freer and motivated.”

“I feel like it is improving because I feel like I’m welcomed here.”

“When my mental health is improving, I feel more constant and in the moment.”

“My mood is very reflective of the state of my mental health, so checking in with myself and my emotions tells me what my mental health is like at any given time.”

A student’s success relies heavily on their mental health. YVHS has a deep understanding of this need.

“YVHS lightens the stress of school and has a smaller community that is accepting.”
