The contract for Moffat County School District Superintendent Dr. Mathew Neal has been extended through 2029. The school board announced an extension of the contract at this week’s Board of Education meeting. Dr. Neal was offered a $15,000 performance bonus, but he declined the offer of the bonus until he felt the district was on more solid financial footing.

The 113th Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival is Feb. 3-8. Registration for the Winter Carnival Street events is online and it starts at 10 a.m. Friday morning, Jan. 30. The horse events are for kids ages six to 14 years old. Kids can only compete in one event during the weekend. The Shovel Race is for ages 18+. The link to register is below and SSWSC.org

In a few big events this Saturday…

The Ski Town U.S.A. celebration sendoff for the 10 Steamboat athletes headed to Italy for the Olympics in February starts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. It’s on the Steamboat Stage at the base of Steamboat Resort, and there’s a drone show, cauldron lighting, and meet-and-greet with the athletes, both past and present. Details from Steamboat Resort

The Ski Town Showdown is a Texas Hold ‘em Charity Poker Tournament to benefit The Veterans Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. Saturday night.

Finally, there’s a big hockey game Saturday night, with Routt County First Responders up against the Steamboat Ski Patrol. Here’s Steamboat Springs Firefighter/Paramedic Quint Friesell.
“Well, we’re looking forward to the game on Saturday, and it’s going to be interesting to see how well ski patrols’ downhill ability transfers to a flat sheet of ice.”

“Ski Patrol cannot wait to see you guys down at the Howie Dome, Saturday, the 31st. Bring it on, fire department.”
The big game is at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Howelsen Ice Arena. Tickets are $10 for general admission. Money raised will help support a second sheet of ice at Howelsen Ice Arena and the Routt First Responders Foundation Memorial Scholarship. All money raised stays in the Yampa Valley. The 20th Annual Taste of Chocolate is from 4-7 p.m. on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, Feb. 14, in downtown Craig. Businesses and chocolatiers can pick up a registration form at KS Kreations.
