A gray wolf died last week in South Routt County. Colorado Parks and Wildlife says it is the three-year-old breeding male in the King Mountain Pack. It was being collared by CPW and that’s when it died on Jan. 28. The collar was being changed because of low batteries.
This wolf was brought in from Oregon, and released in December of 2023, as part of Colorado’s gray wolf restoration program.
No other details have been given on the location of the King Mountain Pack. But King Mountain is southwest of Toponas.

The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is getting a digital makeover this month. The state’s entire system is being upgraded. To do that, the website and offices will be closed for any motor vehicle services. This includes license plates and drivers licenses.
Online transactions will be unavailable beginning Friday, Feb. 13, and starting up again on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 17. After that, expect some delays as staff at the local DMV offices adjust to the new system.
Take care of any outstanding driver or vehicle transactions, like renewing vehicle registration or drivers licenses, as soon as possible at mydmv.colorado.gov

We also checked with the city on whether there is enough snow for the street events. The answer is yes, that the Howelsen Hill crew makes the snow on the east end of the rodeo grounds next to the ice arena parking lot, and that there will be plenty.
The City of Steamboat Springs is accepting ideas and applications for a new 4th of July event, since fireworks displays are no longer feasible because of the wildfire risk. Event producers can submit a questionnaire to the city before March 1. Finalists will need to submit a comprehensive special event permit to be eligible for funding. The 4th of July is on a Saturday this year.
