Students at Steamboat Springs High School did a walkout Wednesday morning, protesting ICE, which is U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and its policies. The protest was student led.

Three students spoke at the walkout: Izzy Hamric, Reece Hoy, and Claire Shea.

Izzy Hamrick. And why this is important is because all three of us have really strong voices, and I think it’s really important that we use those voices to advocate for those around us and to make a change in our world.

My name’s Reece Hoy. And I think it was important that we spoke up today to show community and unity in our school and just stand up against everything that’s been going on outside of our bubble.

My name is Claire Shea, and I think it was really important for us to rally the student body of the high school. Because the student voice and youth voice of Steamboat, we haven’t had a big outreach like this and it was a really big turnout that I think was super important to, not only just educate people, but to have them turn inward and ask themselves what they believe in.

Students for and against ICE were at the rally. Teachers were directed to stay in their classrooms. There was also a strong police presence at the high school during the walkout.
