Colorado saw an increase of bear sightings and conflicts in 2025, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife. There were 5,299 reports filed, which is 15 percent higher than the previous six years. Trash continues to be the number one source of conflicts between humans and bears, at 57 percent. In Steamboat Springs, all residents and businesses must use city-approved bear-resistant trash containers or secured enclosures to prevent bear access. Trash must be secured at all times, not just on collection day, and containers should only be placed curbside after 6 a.m. on pickup day. And always keep your vehicle doors locked because bears know how to get into cars.
