From Steamboat Resort: The Colorado Avalanche Information Center has issued an Avalanche Warning for our area. Avalanche danger is high due to heavy/wet snow, high winds, and fragile snowpack. Backcountry travel is not recommended. On Thursday, Steamboat Ski Patrol will be performing avalanche mitigation in the Fish Creek Canyon throughout the day. Fish Creek Canyon is CLOSED. Travel up the Fish Creek Trail past Gate 8 is also CLOSED. This is an active avalanche closure and it will not open after mitigation. Steamboat Resort is asking all skiers and riders to please respect all signage and closures. Entering closed terrain will result in loss of pass privileges.

The Hayden Municipal Housing Authority is under contract to purchase the Pinyon Pine Estate Mobile Home Park. There are 62 mobile homes in the park and one single-family residence, along U.S. Hwy 40 on the west side of Hayden.

The purchase price is $8.25 million. The park will continue on as a mobile home park, “for the preservation of affordable housing in the community of Hayden,” said Mathew Mendisco, the executive director of the Hayden Municipal Housing Authority.

“It’s just something so amazing when everyone up here was such an amazing nominee and any one of us could have won and it would have been justified. Coming from a rural community where kids think that they’re limited a lot of the time, it’s honoring to show that you’re not limited. You can do whatever you set your mind to.”

Those who were in the running for Youth of the Year were:

  • Barbara Saenz – SSHS
  • Brooke Butas – SSHS
  • Haley Duran – MCHS
  • Jordan Latrimurti – SSHS
  • Karson Fedinec – MCHS
  • Lindsey Brown – MCHS
  • Sam Antonio – YVHS
  • Sofia Luna — MCHS

Steamboat Springs High School seniors Hailey Znamemacek and Ella Wilson won Grand Prize for Best Overall Science Project at the Western Slope Regional Science Fair earlier this month. A presentation called, “Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention,” was Wednesday night at the Steamboat Grand. It was presented by Steamboat Resort in partnership with REPS, which is Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide. Talk Saves Lives is the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s flagship education program. It provides an overview of the scope of suicide as a public health issue, the research on warning signs and risk factors, and the strategies that can help prevent it. According to REPS, Colorado consistently ranks among the top states in the nation for suicide rates, and rural mountain communities like ours face an even higher risk.
