That fake Motor Vehicles Department Notice text message is starting up again, and hitting the phones of local residents. It says you have an outstanding ticket, and you’d better get it fixed by March 10. It says you’ll lose your car, your driver’s license, and have all kinds of fees that will go to collections. It just isn’t true, so don’t open any links or fall for it. It’s a scam.
Here’s more from the Colorado Department of Revenue: https://dmv.colorado.gov/fraud-alertsscams
Here’s what the SCAM text message says:
Motor Vehicles Department Notice: Please Address Your Traffic Violation Record as Soon as Possible
You still have one outstanding traffic ticket on your record. According to revised regulations of the Colorado Department of Taxation (Motor Vehicles Department) (including Sections 42-2-127, 42-2-138, and related enforcement rules), if the fine remains unpaid by March 9, 2026, the following actions will begin on March 10:
- The violation will be permanently recorded in the state DMV database, impacting your driving record, future insurance rates, and employment checks.
- Your vehicle registration may face enforcement holds — preventing renewal or legal operation of any vehicle registered to you until resolved.
- Your driver’s license and driving privileges will be suspended — prohibiting driving in Colorado and potentially affecting reciprocity with other states.
- Additional fees will apply, including a $95 reinstatement fee, late charges, collection costs, and possible referral for further enforcement.
- The unpaid amount will be referred to collections, which may lead to court action, potential warrants for failure to appear or pay, and reporting to credit bureaus — seriously affecting your credit.
This is a firm deadline. Please resolve this citation as soon as possible to avoid suspension of your license and further escalation:
Taking care of this today is the fastest way to stop tomorrow’s suspensions and halt additional collection activity.
