Howelsen Hill is closing this Sunday, March 22, which is a week earlier than originally planned at the beginning of the season. You can ski and ride for fee on closing day. Look for lots of colorful costumes, food and drink specials and a DJ. Lifts will be running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stop by the ticket office to pick up your free ticket on Sunday. Tubing at Howelsen Hill will be 50% off on Sunday. This has been the 110th winter season for Howelsen Hill, the oldest continuously operating ski area in North America.

The Routt County Board of County Commissioners has their regular meeting this morning. Monitoring reports on conservation easements will be presented from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and Colorado Cattlemen’s Agricultural Land Trust.
Grant funding is on the agenda as well. One request for an application is requesting $250,000 to the History Colorado State Historical Fund to support the preservation of the historic Routt County Courthouse, built in 1923. A Veterans Assistance Grant will be discussed. The third grant is a Congressional Directed Spending Request to the offices of Senators Hickenlooper and Bennet for $3,060,000 for the Eastern Terminal Expansion Final Design of Yampa Valley Regional Airport.

Steamboat Springs City Council meets tonight. The meeting for the Brown Ranch Steering Committee is one item on the agenda. That meeting starts at 4 p.m.

Tonight is Cookies with Council in the Town of Hayden. Join Hayden council members for a roundtable discussion at 5:30 p.m. in the Magnolia Room at The Hayden Center. It’s free, as are the cookies and hot cocoa.
The School Board for the South Routt School District has a 5:30 p.m. meeting tonight.

Registration is open for the annual Colorado Cattlemen’s Convention. It’s June 22-24 in Loveland. Erik Glenn, the Executive Director of the Colorado Cattlemen’s Agricultural Land Trust says why it’s important, especially for Routt County.
“And John Routt was one of the first presidents of the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association. The connections to this county, the beef production, production in agriculture, are explicitly tied to what we do in this sate and what makes this state and this county special.”

Registration is open for a new gravel race. Outlaw Gravel debuts in Steamboat Springs and Routt County on Sunday, May 31. It is limited to 300 riders. Courses are either 44 miles or 66 miles, with timed segments, with the start and finish at Olympian Hall at Howelsen Hill. The course also goes down along Stagecoach Reservoir in South Routt. A portion of the proceeds will support the Dirt to Snow – Mark Satkiewicz Legacy Fund.
