Paul McCartney has returned with new music, debuting the new single Days We Left Behind as the first preview of his upcoming 18th solo album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane. The project—his first since McCartney III in 2020—is set to arrive this spring, after more than five years in development.

The 14-track album centers on McCartney’s early life in Liverpool, drawing heavily from personal memories of growing up in working-class neighborhoods like Speke, as well as reflections on his formative years before global fame. The title itself references a local route tied to his childhood and is pulled directly from a lyric in the lead single.

In discussing the song Days We Left Behind, McCartney shares: “This is very much a memory song for me. The album title, ‘The Boys of Dungeon Lane,’ comes from a lyric in this track. I was thinking just that, about the days I left behind and I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past but then I think how can you write about anything else? It’s just a lot of memories of Liverpool. It involves a bit in the middle about John and Forthlin Road which is the street I used to live in. Dungeon Lane is near there. I used to live in a place called Speke which is quite working class. We didn’t have much at all but it didn’t matter because all the people were great and you didn’t notice you didn’t have much.”

Produced by Andrew Watt, the album blends styles from across his long career, and also includes more personal material, with some songs inspired by his relationship with his wife, Nancy Shevell. The album announcement also came just ahead of a pair of intimate live performances from McCartney in Los Angeles, marking his first shows of 2026 (following the conclusion of his Got Back tour last year.)
