The HOPE Initiative Update: Expanding Mental Health Support in Steamboat Springs
By: Chresta Brinkman and Valery Lozano
Looking to launch in the next two to three months, the HOPE Initiative (Helping Others Through Peer Engagement) represents a significant step forward in addressing mental health needs across Routt County.
A coalition of community partners came together, including UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center, Northwest Colorado Health, Health Solutions West, REPS (Reaching Everyone, Preventing Suicide), Warhorse Ranch, and the Yampa Valley Community Foundation. With the help of generous donors, The Health Partnership (THP) stepped into a leadership role, guiding the development and implementation of the initiative.
Rooted in community collaboration and data-driven insight, this innovative program is designed to support individuals who are struggling and not in immediate crisis, by offering accessible, compassionate, and locally grounded care.
Data from the Routt County Community Health Needs Assessment, which identified behavioral health as a critical concern, supported the observations by the core team. This survey found that 25% of respondents cited the need for increased access to mental health crisis services, while 11% reported needing support but not accessing it. These findings highlighted and supported the observation of a gap for those who fall between wellness and crisis who need connection, guidance, and early support.
Dana Antonio has been named HOPE Initiative Project Manager. With experience as a Behavioral Health Care Coordinator at THP, prior work in human services, and deep community ties as a longtime ski patroller, she brings both professional expertise and personal passion to the role to introduce a peer-based approach to mental health care by connecting individuals with trained peer support specialists who have lived experience. Key components include:
– A 24/7 HOPE Line offering immediate, compassionate support
– Resource navigation and referrals to simplify access to care
– In-person peer connection and respite support
– A Community Safety Team to enhance awareness and response
– Outreach and education efforts to reduce stigma and increase engagement
The HOPE Initiative will provide proactive, community-based mental health care by prioritizing early intervention, human connection, and accessibility. As the pilot launches, its success will depend on continued community awareness, engagement, and support so stay tuned and spread the word.
Together, Routt County is building a stronger, more connected system of care by ensuring that no one must navigate mental health challenges alone.
