Traffic control is being set up along Highway 40 on the west side of Hayden right now. New sidewalks are being installed this summer for safer pedestrian mobility.
Right now, signs are being installed along the section of highway for the curb, gutter, and sidewalk work that will begin on April 13.
From April 13-May 13, traffic will be stopped at temporary stoplights for alternating traffic. Phase 1 lasts through May 13, which is when Phase 2 begins through June 23. CDOT says wait times will range from one minute during non-peak hours to 20 minutes during peak community times.

Upcoming CDOT Roadwork on HWY 40 — Hayden, CO
From April 13th through June 23rd, roadwork will be occurring along Highway 40 in the section of highway highlighted in the map below. The work will occur from 7am until 7pm Monday through Saturday.
Phase 0:
• March 30-April 13, 2026
• Traffic Control Set up.
• Signs installed on message board along the highway
• No closures during this phase
Phase 1:
• April 13-May 13, 2026
• HWY 40 eastbound lane headed to Steamboat will be closed with only one lane of traffic open.
• Traffic will be stopped at temporary stop lights to allow for alternating traffic. Expect reduced speeds and delays. Each traffic light cycle will be approximately 4-6 minutes and will be adjusted based on direction of high traffic. Wait times will range from one minute during non-peak hours to 20 minutes during peak commute time.
• Traffic Control will direct traffic in both directions.
• West entrance/exit of Jefferson Ave. Closed. All traffic will be directed to 8th Street to access Pinyon Pines Estates.
Phase 2:
• May 13-June 23, 2026
• Curb, gutter, and sidewalk work along eastbound HWY40
• Both lanes will be open and the stop light will be removed. Reduced speeds will still apply.
