Resurfacing of U.S. Highway 40 begins Monday, April 6, on a 14-mile stretch through Milner. Paving work is from Mile Markers 112 to 126, which is the Xcel Energy Hayden Station to about five miles west of Steamboat Springs. Work hours are 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. to accommodate commuter traffic, Monday through Friday.
Work will also eventually be done overnight.
Traffic will reduce to single lane, with alternating traffic. Expect delays up to ten minutes.
Work will also include replacement of guardrails and safety enhancement on three bridges.

Slope stabilization will also be done in the rockfall area of Mount Harris Canyon.
United Companies is the contractor. The project is expected to last through mid-November.

US 40 Milner resurfacing project to begin Monday, April 6
Bridge safety enhancements and guardrail work is also included
Routt County — The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin a 14-mile resurfacing project on Monday, April 6, along US Highway 40 through Milner. Paving work will take place from the Xcel Energy Hayden station, Mile Point 112, to about five miles west of Steamboat Springs, MP 126.
Additional work includes guardrail replacement, minor improvements and safety enhancements on three bridges and slope stabilization. The project is expected to be completed by the middle of November.
Nightwork for paving operations is anticipated to begin mid May. This highly traveled commuter corridor between Craig and Steamboat Springs will see benefits including improved driving surfaces and slope stabilization in the notoriously challenging rockfall location of Mt. Harris Canyon.
United Companies, of Grand Junction, is the contractor for this $12 million project.
Travel Impacts
- Work includes barrier placement for the slope stabilization and work on the bridge at MP 113 on the west end of the project limits.
- Daytime work hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.in order to accommodate the commuter traffic on the US 40 corridor, Monday through Friday.
- When paving operations begin, nighttime hours will be 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- Vehicles will be reduced to a single-lane, alternating traffic intermittently in either direction, throughout the duration of the project
- Temporary traffic signals will be in place 24/7 from Mile Point 115 to MP 116 in Mount Harris Canyon for the slope stabilization operation.
- Lane closures, guided by flaggers, will have up to 10-minute delays.
- The speed limit will be reduced to 40 mph through the work zone.
- The project is expected to last until the middle of November.
