“This is a huge honor for the entire community of Steamboat Springs and downtown. It recognizes not just Main Street Steamboat, but things like our historic district downtown, the creative district downtown, and all of the partnerships that we have with people like the city, the chamber, and our CEDP. It’s not just about us, it’s about our community and the things that we all do together, the places that we gather together, like the Farmers Market and Winter Carnival. So Winter Sports Club is included in that honor as well.”

Popovich will be at the awards ceremony next Monday in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Main Street Steamboat Springs ANNOUNCED AS 2026 GREAT AMERICAN MAIN STREET AWARD SEMIFINALIST

One of Eight Organizations Recognized Nationally for Exemplary Downtown Revitalization Efforts

Steamboat Springs, Colorado – Main Street America has announced Main Street Steamboat Springs as a 2026 Great American Main Street Award (GAMSA) semifinalist. This prestigious award is the nation’s top award recognizing communities for their excellence in comprehensive preservation-based commercial district revitalization.

A jury of professionals and leaders in the fields of community and economic development and historic preservation convened to review a nationwide pool of applicants. After thoughtful deliberation, the jury unanimously selected eight semifinalists that demonstrate exemplary use of the Main Street Approach™ to lead community-based transformation strategies in their downtowns.

The 2026 Great American Main Street Award semifinalists are:

  • Astoria Downtown Historic District Association – Astoria, Oregon
  • Main Street Farmington – Farmington, Oakland County, Michigan
  • Tulsa Global District – Tulsa, Oklahoma
  • Downtown Wytheville, Inc. – Wytheville, Virginia
  • Main Street Steamboat Springs – Steamboat Springs, Colorado
  • Downtown San Marcos – San Marcos, Texas
  • Downtown Sykesville Connection – Sykesville, Maryland
  • Columbia Main Street – Columbia, Tennessee

“It is my privilege to recognize the eight semifinalists for the 2026 Great American Main Street Award,” said Main Street America President and CEO Erin Barnes. “Through innovation and determination, these programs exemplify the unwavering dedication of Main Streets across the country to building resilient and revitalized communities.”

Collectively, the 2026 GAMSA semifinalists have generated over $329 million in local reinvestment, helped open over 650 new businesses, facilitated the creation of more than 3,630 new jobs, catalyzed the rehabilitation of 1,942 historic buildings, and leveraged 241,946 volunteer hours.

Competing for the Great American Main Street Award is a significant achievement in the Main Street Movement, and receiving the award is an esteemed honor. Since its establishment in 1995, only 112 of over 1600 Main Street programs have been acknowledged as GAMSA-winning communities. Many Main Street programs set multi-year plans to work towards developing a strong application based on outcomes that make meaningful impacts in their local communities. Organizations are familiar with the selection criteria—strength of the Main Street program in spurring community transformation, commitment to historic preservation, innovative programming, implementation of cross-sector partnerships, community outreach and stakeholder engagement, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion—and build towards this opportunity to be recognized.

“It is truly and honor to be recognized this way. Steamboat Springs is an amazing community and while Main Street Steamboat Springs is recognized for this award, it is really due to the efforts of so many other groups and individuals that have made this honor possible,” said Lisa Popovich Executive Director

“Recognition as a semifinalist for the 2026 Great American Main Street Award affirms the often-unrecognized work of Main Street Steamboat Director Lisa Popovich and her dedicated staff and volunteers. Their collective efforts have a profound and lasting impact on the vitality of downtown Steamboat Springs and continue to enhance the Steamboat experience for both residents and visitors to this special valley,” said JJ Johnson, Main Street Steamboat Board President.

The 2026 Great American Main Street Award ceremony will be held at the opening plenary of the 2026 Main Street Now Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma on April 13, 2026, where three semifinalists will be recognized as recipients of the coveted honor.
