The New York Islanders made a dramatic move just days before the end of the regular season, dismissing head coach Patrick Roy and appointing seasoned bench boss Peter DeBoer as his replacement.
With only four games remaining, the decision comes at a tense moment for the franchise. New York, sitting at 42-31-5 with 89 points, remains in playoff position but has seen its cushion shrink following a rough stretch—losing four straight and seven of its last 10 contests. What once looked like a comfortable postseason path has turned into a tight race, with multiple teams close behind in the standings. The organization ultimately opted for a change in direction, citing concerns over defensive play and the need to better support goaltender Ilya Sorokin during the critical final stretch.
Roy, who took over midway through the 2023–24 campaign, compiled a 97-78-22 record during his tenure. His arrival initially sparked a turnaround that led to a playoff appearance, though the Islanders were eliminated in the first round by Carolina. This season, however, the team struggled to maintain consistency, including a recent collapse in which they surrendered a lead in a loss to the Hurricanes—marking their fourth consecutive defeat.
DeBoer, 57, steps in with extensive experience and a strong track record. Across 17 NHL seasons, he has posted a 662-447-152 record and guided both the New Jersey Devils and San Jose Sharks to Stanley Cup Final appearances. Known for his postseason success, his 97 playoff wins rank among the highest in league history for a coach without a championship title.
Most recently, DeBoer coached the Dallas Stars, leading them to three straight Western Conference Final appearances before his departure last year. He also spent time this season as an assistant coach for Team Canada during the Milan Cortina Olympics while awaiting his next opportunity.
“All I can say is, I’m ready,” DeBoer said recently. “There are only 32 jobs in the NHL and it’s a privilege to have one of them. I’m humble enough to know that. Having said that, I have a lot of confidence in my track record of coming in and having success in different places, and I’m especially proud of my ability in the playoffs to have teams move forward.”
The Islanders return to action Thursday when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs.
