Routt County Proclaims April 2026 Month of the Young Child
Routt County, CO, April 7, 2026 The Routt County Board of Commissioners welcomed students from several local early childhood education centers as they officially proclaimed April as the Month of the Young Child in Routt County.
Through the proclamation, the Board recognized the essential role of early childhood educators, child care providers, and families, and reaffirmed the community’s commitment to supporting young children during their most critical years of growth and development.
“Our community’s future starts with our youngest children,” said Meg Franges, First Impressions Executive Director. “Proclaiming April as the Month of the Young Child is a reminder that it takes a collective effort to ensure every child has the opportunity to grow, learn, and succeed.”
April is nationally recognized as the Month of the Young Child, a time to highlight the importance of early childhood in building a strong and healthy community. In Routt County, approximately 1,200 children under the age of six rely on a network of early care and education providers, families, and community supports to ensure they are safe, healthy, and ready for school and life.
High quality early care and education is essential for healthy child development and long term success. It supports social emotional development, early learning, and family stability, and serves as a powerful preventative factor against later challenges such as academic struggles, behavioral concerns, and mental health issues.
Local data continues to show significant challenges in the early childhood system, including a shortage of approximately 270 child care slots, particularly for infants and toddlers, and affordability pressures with families reporting spending up to 28% of their income on child care. These challenges impact not only children and families but also the broader workforce and economic stability of the community.
The Proclamation reads as follows:
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING APRIL 2026 AS THE MONTH OF THE YOUNG CHILD IN ROUTT COUNTY, COLORADO
Whereas, Routt County’s Early Childhood Council, First Impressions, and other local, state, and national organizations are celebrating April 2026 as the Month of the Young Child, uniting our community around the well-being and bright futures of our youngest residents; and
Whereas, the earliest years of a child’s life are the most formative for brain development, establishing the foundation upon which all future learning, health, and well-being are built; and
Whereas, access to safe, affordable, and high-quality early childhood education is essential for children to grow into healthy, capable individuals, and it is our shared responsibility to ensure that all children have secure and nurturing learning environments; and
Whereas, children thrive under the care of skilled, dedicated early childhood educators who deserve meaningful support, ongoing professional development, and fair compensation for their vital contributions; and
Whereas, families must have access to affordable and culturally responsive early education options that honor their values and traditions while empowering children to reach their full potential; and
Whereas, our entire community bears a collective responsibility to ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow and flourish in a safe, supportive environment that fosters curiosity, confidence, and lifelong learning;
Therefore, be it resolved that Routt County does hereby proclaim April 2026 as the Month of the Young Child. We encourage all citizens to champion the creation of safe, affordable, and high-quality educational opportunities for all children, giving them the tools and the foundation they need for a secure and successful future.
