The Chief Theater Development Plan for renovations, rehabilitation, and improvements has been approved by the Steamboat Springs Planning Commission.

The vote was 5-1.

The project would be a complete renovation to the historic Chief Theater at 813 Lincoln Ave., built back in 1927. It’s been empty since about 2021, except for occasional vandalism, including just last month.

The remodel would make it an indoor event venue that could accommodate 800 people, with a bar and food. There would be a new marquee out front, and the height of the building would be increased from 23 feet to 38 feet.

You can hear the vote and the presentation on the website for the City of Steamboat Springs.

The recommendation for approval will be heard by Steamboat Springs City Council on June 16.
