Routt County Commissioners have declared that May is Older Americans Month. The vote was unanimous at their meeting today.

Heather Jones from the Area Agency on Aging in NW Colorado and Catherine Lykken, Former Director of Routt County Human Services, commented on the importance of showing appreciation for the older Routt County community members. Commissioner Chair Tim Corrigan added that he is part of the Older Americans demographic.

“We certainly need to take the time to celebrate our Older Americans and Older Coloradoans and their contributions to our communities,” said Heather Jones, Director from the Area Agency on Aging. “They play a vital role in sharing their experiences and knowledge that help shape current and future decisions. Many of our older adults are actively engaged in their communities, which fosters building strong and resilient communities. The Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Colorado is proud to collaborate with local providers (some who are present today) to help older adults maintain dignity, health, and independence.”

The proclamation states:

“A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF MAY OLDER AMERICANS MONTH WHEREAS, Routt County includes a growing number of older Americans who have built resilience and strength over their lives through successes and difficulties;

and WHEREAS, Routt County benefits when people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds are included and encouraged to share their successes and stories of resilience;

and WHEREAS, we recognize our need to nurture ourselves, reinforce our strength, and continue to thrive in times of both joy and difficulty; and WHEREAS, Routt County will foster a community of strength by:

  • creating opportunities to share stories and learn from each other;
  • engaging older adults through education, recreation and service; and
  • encouraging people of all ages to celebrate connections and resilience.

 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Routt County Commissioners do hereby proclaim May 2021 as OLDER AMERICANS MONTH in Routt County, and urge every resident to recognize older adults and the people who support them as essential contributors to the strength of our community.

ADOPTED this 18th day of May, 2021.

BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, ROUTT COUNTY, COLORADO.”
