Senator Michael Bennet visited Craig Wednesday afternoon to tour the new Moffat County Courthouse and county offices, which are going in the old Kmart building. It’s a $4.65 million dollar renovation paid for with grants and federal money requested by Colorado Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper.

 

The combined courthouse and county offices will reduce the current costs by having all groups in one building. The building is 100,000 square feet and 80,000 square feet of that will be built out. The building is scheduled to be ready for use on Jan. 10, 2023.

Commissioner Don Broom was appreciative but added, “Sometimes we feel like we’re left out up in our corner of the state.” But he added that this is a smart way to spend the money that the county got.

Craig Mayor Ryan Hess thanked Senator Bennet for the support and emphasized the need for a new courthouse. He added that they’ve learned that the county and city need to partner with each other.

 

Next, there will be meetings with the public on how to repurpose the current courthouse building once the new one is built.
