Those attending the Rainbow Family gathering up in northwest Routt County should start heading home today and through the end of the week. It’s the 50th anniversary for the group which is having their unauthorized gathering up in northwest Routt County this year. At last count, the U.S. Forest Service estimated over 9,000 in attendance, as of Sunday.
One journalist who attended the gathering was Chase Baker. He works for a new YouTube channel that does documentaries.
Chase is on the left. He found a member of the Rainbow Family with the same shirt, so they took a picture.
As the group packs up and heads home, they’ll be hauling out tents and belongings on the trails down to Routt County Road 80 and the meadows where their vehicles are parked.
One cause for concern among those in the Rainbow Family is that the ATV trails in the area where they are camping opened up July 1. Tenali Hrenak is asking that any ATV riders be aware of the many families that will be on the trail.
Aaron Voos with the U.S. Forest Service for Routt National Forest says, “Anyone using the ATV trails in that area should be aware that the unauthorized gathering is occurring.”
The forest service says many in the Rainbow Family will stay on site for several weeks to work on clean-up and rehabilitation in the area.
