A family ranch rodeo Sunday brought in families from throughout northwest Colorado to compete at the rodeo arena, between Yampa and Toponas. The Egeria Park Roping Club has been dormant for about 20 years, but some of the local families with help from the Soroco FFA fixed it up and had everyone out for a fun Sunday afternoon of rodeo.

Here’s Tiffany Gates who helped pull it all together.

“This is great. We’re so excited to see it here in Toponas, and have it here and have everybody inclusive from the school and have everybody check out our way of life.”

The event was a fundraiser for the Soroco schools. The Soroco FFA was on hand to help with set up and food. Here’s Rachelle Dudley, the reporter for the local Soroco FFA chapter..

“This is the PTO Ranch Rodeo and it’s something that we put on annually. And it’s really great because it brings the community together. We have a great time. We have food and we have events. And it’s just so much fun and it’s a great time to come support the PTO, and the school, and the Soroco FFA.”

Jay Whaley heads up the Soroco FFA at the high school. He says his grandfather used to rodeo in the Egeria Park arena.

“There’s a lot of history of rodeo in this valley. A lot of the old timers years ago would come here and this was one of the places they would rodeo.”

Now, there’s roping on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the arena.

Sunday’s event also featured food from the FFA members and local ranching families.

Story from the Steamboat Pilot from March 8, 2003 —  A place of tremendous beautify: Cowboys work to preserve historical Egeria Park Roping Club

Egeria (mythology) — Egeria (Latin: [eːˈgɛria],[1] Ancient Greek: Ἠγερία[2]) was a nymph attributed a legendary role in the early history of Rome as a divine consort and counselor of Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome, to whom she imparted laws and rituals pertaining to ancient Roman religion. Her name is used as an eponym for a female advisor or counselor.
