Today is the first day of school in Moffat County and the Hayden School Districts.

Moffat County has Jill Hafey in her first year as superintendent of the district. Andrea Murphy has replaced her as the new principal at Sunset Elementary. James Wright is the new athletic director at the high school.

Tuesday is the first day of school for Steamboat with new superintendent Dr. Celine Wicks at the helm. New interim principals are Joe Laliberte at Sleeping Giant School and Eron Haubert at Strawberry Park Elementary.

Soroco has David Grabowski as principal of the middle school and high school. He’s from North Routt. Dr. Kirk Henwood is the new superintendent of the Soroco district. He comes from Walsh, Colo.

Three of the four districts in Routt and Moffat counties are on a 4-day school week, all except Steamboat Springs.

 

The Moffat County Board of County Commissioners meets Tuesday morning. There’s a staff report from Dan Miller and Bruce White with Road and Bridge.

 

The Steamboat Springs City Council meets Tuesday night. Agenda items include staff reports and a Community Recycling report. Another resolution includes accepting the terms of a State of Colorado Aviation System grant for the Flight Simulator project. Agenda

 

Community leaders and ag producers met with representatives of U.S. Senator Michael Bennet’s office in Craig and Steamboat late last week, to find out how the Farm Bill can better help NW Colorado. The Farm Bill is a trillion dollar package that runs through Sept. 2023. Here’s Matt Kireker with Sen. Bennet’s office.

Local Routt County rancher Jo Stanko spoke at the meeting and said the Farm Bill provides a safety net for farmers and ranchers, plus opportunities in education, conservation, and innovation.

Rio Blanco County Commissioner Ginny Love said collaboration is important.

“We need to realize that we’re a small area here. We all work together very well: Routt County, Moffat County, and Rio Blanco County. And we need to continue to be strong in our efforts to bring agriculture to the forefront.”

Representatives from Senator Bennet’s office are taking information from all of the community sessions back to his office in Washington D.C.

 

A community conversation on aging is being hosted by the Area Agency of Northwest Colorado. It’s from 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Senior Social Center at 775 Yampa Ave. in Craig.

 

The Routt County Fair wrapped up over the weekend. Final Grand Champions include Kasey Singer with the Grand Champion Goat. She’ll be an 8th grader at Hayden Middle School.

Grand Champion Market Lamb was Kimberly Gray, headed into 9th grade at Hayden.
