Two moose have been euthanized in Steamboat Springs within the last month. The first was a bull moose, after a vehicle collision on Jan. 28, on Aspen Wood Lane. That’s in the Sanctuary neighborhood off of Steamboat Blvd.
A second moose was involved in a vehicle collision on Feb. 9 on Broad Street in Old Town Steamboat Springs. This was a moose cow with a calf. Kris Middledorf with Colorado Parks and Wildlife says the cow was donated for the meat.
Middledorf says the calf is in good condition and has been seen throughout the downtown Steamboat Springs neighborhood. Middledorf adds, “This time of year, calves are able to survive on their own and are not dependent on their parent. However, winter conditions continue to make it challenging for our wildlife including large bodied animals such as moose.”
