A Hayden High School student died in a car crash on Highway 40 near the Routt County border Tuesday evening. The Routt County Coroner has confirmed 14-year-old Alexis (Lexi) Lighthizer died at the scene. She was a freshman at Hayden High School which says that her legal name was Alexis R. Brown. She was passenger in a Ford F250 driven by a 54-year-old man from Hayden who has life threatening injuries. Colorado State Patrol reports that the Ford F250 she was in crossed into oncoming traffic and hit two other cars. Those drivers, one from Hayden and one from Craig, all had minor to moderate injuries.
The Hayden School District has had counselors available at the high school, and more counselors from Moffat County to help support students and the community.
The Steamboat Springs School District was part of a statewide “swatting” incident. That’s where someone makes an anonymous call to try to engage SWAT teams and law enforcement. It happened at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon. Routt County Communications received a phone call and the caller identified Steamboat Springs High School as the target. Officers responded. It was all a hoax. It is a statewide incident that is being investigated by the FBI.
Wednesday’s snowy weather shut down Hwy 40 again, west of Maybell on to the Utah border, and Northwest on 318 in Moffat County. There was also a multi-car crash west of Maybell near Elk Springs. Highway 40 was closed for awhile near Rabbit Ears Pass on into Kremmling. Check CoTrip.org before heading anywhere.

Deep among the snowy neighborhood of Old Town Steamboat Springs, there is a hidden haven of chilly coziness. It’s a huge snow cave hideaway, built by Harris Greene.
“We have seating for nine, plenty of standing room, a nice bar. We put lights in all the walls. (Why do you like to do this?) Therapy! And I don’t like being inside. I realized that this year. I always get to say I played in the snow.”
The big snow cave fills the yard, with a tunnel for an entrance with disco lights, plenty of seating around the fire pit, a bar, firewood, and a mounted antelope head. It’s a wintery gathering place for friends and neighbors.
STEAMBOAT SNOW CAVE IS A HAPPY GATHERING SPOT
The Steamboat Springs High School Boys Basketball team was victorious last night in the first round of the CHSAA State 4A playoffs. They edged past Manitou Springs, 50-47. Sophomore Jeffrey Sturges helped seal the deal with a 4-point play with 20 seconds to go in the game, which was on his birthday. The Sailors are headed to the Sweet 16 for the third year in a row.
