Changes have gone into effect that can streamline registering your vehicle, and the titling process. One change is that you can make it so all vehicles in your household can be registered at the same time. Specialty license plates can be kept and transferred to another vehicle. An inoperable decal has been created for those vehicles undergoing maintenance, repairs, restoration, or rebuilding.

Here’s more from Routt County on the statewide changes to the Vehicle Registration Process; March 24, 2023.

Changes to the Vehicle Registration Process

Steamboat Springs, CO, March 24, 2023 – A new Colorado law went into effect on March 1, 2023. Vehicle Registration And Certificate Of Title Act (HB22-1388) streamlines various vehicle registration and title processes that should simplify the process for residents to register their vehicles.

Routt County Clerk & Recorder Jenny Thomas said, “Our Motor Vehicle team wants to make sure that Routt County residents are aware of these changes that were implemented on March 1. It can be a much more convenient process, and all information can be found on our website https://www.co.routt.co.us/227/Motor-Vehicle-Registration.”

Changes of note:

  • Vehicle owners who have more than one vehicle can now register one of the vehicles for less than a year so that all the owner’s vehicles can expire at the same time.
  • Vehicle owners can now keep their specialty license plates when transferring to another vehicle.
  • New documents accepted in lieu of scale tickets:
    • a manufacturer’s certificate of origin
    • certificate of title
    • certified scale ticket
  • A one-time late registration fee of $10 for utility trailers, trailers with an empty weight of 16,000 or less, camper trailers, multipurpose trailers and trailer coaches that have not been registered since before July 1, 2010.

  • Creation of an inoperable decal. Any owner of an inoperable vehicle undergoing maintenance, repair, restoration, rebuilding or renovation must pay an annual specific ownership tax. When the taxes are paid, the owner will receive a decal as proof of registration. No surcharges or fees will be charged if the owner keeps the vehicle on private property for the purposes of maintenance, repair, restoration, rebuilding, or renovation.
