The Sandhill Crane Nest Camera is back up and running for the spring and summer. It is in a marshy and still snowy area of Routt County. Sandhill Cranes in Colorado typically lay two eggs in late April or early May. They will incubate those eggs for about 30 days. About a day after hatching, the chicks will leave the nest with their parents.

Erin Gelling with the Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition says they think Rocky and Athena are back again. “On April 12th, we could see what we believe is Rocky and Athena painting their feathers. We also saw them nest building in the afternoon. The cranes are definitely preparing for nesting, and I bet they are hoping the snow will melt soon so they can start!”

And like last year, a raccoon has already visited the area.
