Three new electric vehicle charging ports have been added to the Howelsen Rodeo Complex. That doubles the number to six charging ports there. Eighty percent of the project was paid for with a Charge Ahead Colorado grant through the Colorado Energy Office.

Press release from the City of Steamboat Springs; Aug. 28, 2023.

Rodeo EV Charging Capacity Doubles With New Ports

12 EV Level 2 Charging Ports Now Available In Popular Location

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-August 28, 2023-The City of Steamboat Springs completed the installation of three new electric vehicle charging ports at the Howelsen Rodeo Complex, doubling the current capacity. The Charge Ahead Colorado grant through the Colorado Energy Office paid for $27,000 or 80% of the project.

“The new ports double the capacity for EV charging in this popular location,” said Facilities Manager Eric Friese. “This spot easily serves Howelsen Park facilities and trail network as well as is close to the downtown historic commercial and entertainment area and free SST bus system.”

This project included the purchase and installation of three Level 2 dual port charging stations for public use at the Howelsen Rodeo Arena, a central and popular downtown parking location. The new ports join three current ports at this location as installation was easier due to accessible conduit and available electricity.

Currently, the city provides 6 Level II EV charging stations, 12 ports at the Rodeo Ground, and 1 port behind Centennial Hall/Elkins House. All charging ports can be accessed through ChargePoint and costs $0.15 per KWH. Always check to see if overstay charges apply before charging.

Over the past year, the city’s charging ports have enjoyed more than 3,600 charging sessions. Down the road, a dozen new dual charging ports are planned and will be spread across the new City Hall, downtown Fire Station and on 10th Street.

Charge Ahead Colorado encourages use of electric vehicles because they reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote energy security through reliance on domestic electricity, and drive an innovative market for new technology. Program grants boost the installation of EV charging stations throughout Colorado enabling electric vehicles to proliferate.

Since 2007, Chargepoint has focused solely on offering the best EV charging experience for everyone involved in the shift to electric mobility. Now, the world’s largest and most open EV charging network in North America, Yampa Valley residents can plug into 21 ports across the city via the Chargepoint network.

Still not in the EV driver’s seat? Individuals can test drive different EVs and learn about ownership during the October Ride & Drive Event, currently schedule for Oct 8 at the Rodeo Grounds. The event is a partnership with Yampa Valley Electric Assoc, Yampa Valley Sustainability Council, Northwest Colorado Clean Cities, and the city.
