A volunteer football coach for Steamboat Springs High School has been released from his coaching duties at the school. Nicholas Cornwell was sentenced on Aug. 11 to serve 60 days in jail for a charge of Driving While Ability Impaired with two plus priors. It is his third lifetime alcohol related driving offense. Judge Erin Wilson says Cornwell does not have to serve the sentence all at once. He can go to the county jail on the weekends. But the sentence does have to be served within the next six months. Cornwell is also on the board of a local youth non-profit called Generation U, which organizes groups of students to build water wells in Uganda.
Two political canvassers were asked to leave in front of the Steamboat Springs City Market Monday. They were asking people going in, “Would you like to sign a petition to lower property taxes?” which is in reference to Initiative 50. A conservative group is trying to get it on the ballot in November 2024. It’s in response to another ballot measure called Proposition HH which will be on the ballot this November. Routt County Commissioner Tim Corrigan was adamant that if Initiative 50 is on the ballot, it would put a cap on government revenues and ignore inflation and services our citizens need.
“Any arbitrary hard cap on government revenues ignores factors like inflation and the critical services that need to be delivered for our citizens. Period. If you would like to stand in longer lines at Motor Vehicle to get your license renewed, if you don’t mind waiting an extra 15 or 20 minutes for emergency services to respond in an emergency, you should vote for this.”
City Market asked the canvassers, who are from Denver, to leave, since political campaigning is not allowed at the store. Eventually, Steamboat Springs Police officers came and the canvassers left.

Abandoned railroad ties are all along the tracks, from just east of Milner headed towards Phippsburg. Union Pacific crews have been replacing the old ties with new ones. Union Pacific says crews will collect them once the entire project in northwest Colorado is completed, which should be early next month. Mike Jaixen is with Corporate Communications for Union Pacific. He says to please not touch those piles of railroad ties. “The ties are on railroad property, so for everyone’s safety, we ask that the public not trespass on Union Pacific’s property adjacent to the tracks.”

A herd of wild horses will be gathered in the West Douglas Herd Area starting this Friday. It’s about 20 miles south of Rangely in Rio Blanco County. The Bureau of Land Management plans to remove all 122 wild horses because they stray into private lands, and there is limited food and water. The horses will be taken to Canon City where they will be checked by a vet and put into the BLM’s wild horse and burro adoption program. Those not adopted will be cared for for the rest of their lives in grass pastures.
