Saturday, Sept. 23, is National Public Lands Day. Volunteers are invited to help preserve and widen areas around the Rotary Trailhead, which is about ten miles west of Steamboat Springs. The work is being organized by the Bureau of Land Management, Routt County Riders, and STARS, which is Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports. The trailhead is on public land within the Emerald Mountain Special Recreation Area, which is managed for mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding. Goals of the event are to improve accessibility for all riders on the Rotary Trail. Meet at the trailhead at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Link to pre-register.

Directions: From downtown Steamboat Springs, head west on Lincoln Ave. Turn left on 13th (Routt County Road 33). Continue on Co. Rd 33 for about five miles. Turn left onto Co. Rd 45. Follow Co. Rd 45 for approximately one mile to the parking area on the left.

The Routt County Humane Society has the Fast & the Furriest 5K9 Fun Run and Walk this Saturday. It is a fundraiser. It starts at 10 a.m. from the base lodge at Howelsen Hill.  Here are the costume contests:

  • Individual and Team Fundraising: Recognizing those who go above and beyond to support RCHS’s mission.
  • Most Four-Legged Run/Walkers: Honoring the team with the most canine companions in tow.
  • Best Dog/Human Costume Duo: Creativity takes the spotlight as participants and their furry friends show off their style.
  • Best Team Costume: Group effort and imagination come together for this exciting category.

Volunteers are also needed with check-in and serving beer at the after-party, if you can help. If you can help, email Kiyomi Bolick at kiyomi@routthumane.org     Or apply here
