Another swastika has been painted into an underpass that goes under Hwy 40. It’s the one by Safeway.
This is in addition to other swastikas burned into a table by Memorial Park and racist comments were written in a structure at Yampa River Botanic Park recently. Anonymous tips have come into Steamboat Police and the District Attorney’s office is involved in the investigation.
The STAND Group, which is Steamboat Team to disrupt Antisemitism and Discrimination), says there have been five cases of swastikas being burned, drawn, or painted into public places. A STAND working group is meeting tomorrow morning to discuss how to move forward.
Steamboat Springs School District Superintendent Dr. Celine Wicks sent a letter Friday acknowledging the antisemitic incidents and hate crimes, saying the school district strongly condemns the antisemitic behavior and it is a priority of the District to educate the students against such actions. Specifics were given for the different schools on how the issues will be addressed. Dr. Wicks added, “We must work together as a community to teach our youth right from wrong.”
Dr. Wicks added, “On behalf of the entire SSSD, I implore each of you to help make our community a more caring, loving, and inclusive environment where everyone feels safe and can live their lives as they choose.”
Dr. Wicks also said the vandalism is under investigation by school administration and law enforcement and that the behavior will not be tolerated.
The Moffat County Board of County Commissioners has meetings scheduled tomorrow. They’re meeting with Library Director Keisha Bickford, and Finance Director Cathy Nielson, at 10 a.m.
Commissioners are meeting with the Moffat County Board of Public Health at 1:30 Tuesday, for their quarterly meeting. Agenda items include updates on a Gun Violence Prevention Grant, flu vaccines, and COVID 19 vaccine status, and also sex education.
Commissioners have a Compensation Alignment workshop with Moffat County Sheriff KC Hume and Human Resources Director Rachel Bower at 2:30 p.m.
Commissioners are meeting with Craig City Council at 4 p.m. tomorrow, for their quarterly combined meeting.
The regular Craig Council meeting is after that. The Yampa Valley Golf Association is asking for a $50K contribution to help with upgrading and replacing equipment for the grounds crew.
The Craig Housing Authority also meets Tuesday morning.
The Steamboat Springs School District Board of Education meets at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, at the middle School.
