Frustrated students, parents, teachers and community members stood up and spoke at Tuesday night’s Steamboat Springs School District Board of Education meeting. It was about the recent swastika vandalism in the community. Ten people told the school board that the district needs to do more to address the anti-Semitism.

One person who spoke is SSHS sophomore Bella Davidson. She is also on the STAND Committee as the student representative.

“The school district needs to address these issues and they need to help start being a part of the change to fix them so that this stops happening.”

The high school is also having a school-wide assembly today to address recent swastika vandalism. Steamboat Springs Police Chief Mark Beckett will be among the presenters.

Another frustration among another group of parents was because of the rising cost of District Pre-School in the Steamboat Springs School District. Parents spoke that they weren’t told of the price increase. School District Superintendent Celine Wicks says it isn’t just a Steamboat issue, but that it’s a problem across the state with the new Universal Pre-K program. Wicks also said that the district will address the need for a district-wide Pre-School Director next year.

Soda Creek Elementary was also recognized as a School of Excellence and the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement award, from the Colorado Department of Education. Principal Amy Bohmer accepted the banners.

The Yampa Valley Balloon Festival gave a $10,000 check to STARS on Tuesday, which is Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports. It was money raised from sponsors of the balloon festival this summer.
