Rich Brown Assumes Permanent Police Commander Spot

Jamie Malone Promoted to Administrative Services Manager

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-October 12, 2023-Police Chief Mark Beckett announced the permanent assignment of Rich Brown to Police Commander and the promotion of Jamie Malone to Administrative Services Manager for the Steamboat Springs Police Department.

“I’m extremely proud that the department has individuals internally with the experience and professional acumen to assume these leadership positions,” commented Beckett. “Rich and Jaime will play a vital leadership role in the future direction for the department and its staff.”

Commander Brown has been serving as the interim commander since February of this year. After a comprehensive promotional process, Brown was the clear choice. In this executive role, Brown is responsible for sworn and civilian members of patrol operations which incorporates Animal Control, Code Enforcement and Patrol Services.

With 31 years with the city and 28 years as a sworn officer, Brown served as a sergeant for two decades before moving into the command position. He attended the Colorado Mountain College Law Enforcement Academy in Glenwood Springs for his Colorado P.O.S.T. certification as well as the University of Alaska and University of Colorado where he focused on accounting, finance, and economics.

As Administrative Services Manager, Jamie Malone, oversees Records, Property/Evidence and Administrative staff as well as serves as the confidential Executive Assistant for Police Services including the command staff. In addition, she is part of the development, implementation, and administration of policies, procedures and programs including the budget, accounts payable and payroll for SSPD. Administration of grants, liquor & medical marijuana clearances, training & travel expenses and all electronic reports and templates fall under the manager’s oversight.

Malone joined the SSPD in April 2022 as the executive assistant to the chief before moving to interim police administrative manager 11 months later. Before joining the department, she and her husband built an off-grid home in North Routt with their own hands. A graduate of the University of Colorado Boulder, she held several technical positions with Sun Microsystems, Oracle, Brocade Communications, and Broadcom, Inc.

The SSPD is comprised of 29 sworn officers and 19 professional civilian members, who are dedicated to keeping the community safe, providing quality police service, and working with citizens and businesses.
