The Routt County Sheriff’s Office is sending a scam alert of fraudulent calls being made to residents concerning legal issues. It looks like the call is from the sheriff’s office, but it isn’t. Never give anyone a credit card or bank account information over the phone like that. Call dispatch if you need help.

 

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Mark Hanson says seven troopers worked the extra patrol Wednesday here in Northwest Colorado, as they said they would. Trooper Hanson says they made 53 traffic stops, issued 14 speeding tickets, four seatbelt tickets, one ticket to a distracted driver, and five other tickets for various reasons.

 

Colorado Northwestern Community College, based in Rangely and Craig, is now offering a Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene. It’s the first 4-year Bachelor’s Degree offered by CVNCC.

 

Colorado State Representative Meghan Lukens has been chosen as one of the country’s outstanding rising leaders. Nineteen people were chosen out of 2,000 nominated by the group “NewDeal,” which stands for Developing Exceptional American Leaders. Lukens grew up in Steamboat Springs and represents Colorado House District 26, which includes Routt, Moffat, Rio Blanco, and parts of Eagle County.

The new park in the Brooklyn neighborhood has been officially dedicated. The ceremony was Thursday afternoon and the playground was packed with happy kids. Angela Cosby is the Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Steamboat Springs.

“This is awesome. Such a big turnout. I’m looking at a couple hundred people enjoying this brand new playground, getting active, playing outside and recreating. It’s what our community is about.”

The playground is designated for two different age groups. It has a soft rubber flooring throughout. The new Brooklyn Park playground replaced the oldest playground in town.

Perry-Mansfield is hosting a Halloween special play called “Frankenstein Slept Here” by Tim Kelley, created by Arty Smith. It’s a series of comedy skits, dances and songs featuring vintage horror monsters. The show is at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, Oct. 20-21, and Oct. 27-28. Come in costume if you’d like. Tickets are $20 for adults, and $10 for those under 16, and can be found at www.perry-mansfield.org/events

 

Advocates of Routt County celebrates 40 years of serving victims of sexual and domestic abuse in our community. On Oct. 21, it’s a special night called “The Art of Survival,” at the Steamboat Grand. There is a gala art show. Entertainment includes classical piano, a performance from Opera Steamboat, and The Cat Pack Jazz Band. There is also a Fine Art Auction benefiting Advocates. Colorado State Senator Dylan Roberts is the featured speaker. Dress with an artistic flair.

Steamboat Creates is offering a FREE hands-on session “Intro to PA” Workshop where you’ll learn the basics of working on film sets as a Production Assistant.  “Intro to PA” is an entry level workshop for people interested in working on film, TV and video sets. The class is presented by Pixel Mill Studios and the Colorado Department of Film and Media, in conjunction with Steamboat Creates and Ground Rush Productions. The three-hour workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, and will give participants an overview of vital skills and hands-on learning for working on-set as a PA (Production Assistant). Colorado Symphony members will be performing at Steamboat Art Museum at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21. The event will feature woodwind trio of Catherine Peterson, Nicholas Tisherman, and Abby Raymond. Tickets are available through ColoradoSymphony.org or at the box office at 303-623-7876. The Steamboat Art Museum is at 807 Lincoln Ave.

 

The Hayden Harvest Festival is from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21. It’s a family friendly celebration of fall in Dry Creek Park. There’s arts and crafts, games, pumpkins, a straw maze, music and food trucks.

 

 The Hayden Granary Community Barn Dance is Saturday night, starting at 6:30 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $10 per adult and $5 per kid at the door. Find out more at HaydenGranary.com

 

 

Celebrate Oaktoberfest in Oak Creek from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21. The Pet and Kid Costume Contest starts at 11 a.m. Then there’s games and a maze, and a pumpkin decorating contest, followed by the Pie and Chili Cookoff.

The Craig branch of the Moffat County Library is partnering with local Girl Scouts to offer a special Saturday Story Time. The Girl Scouts will be reading the books at 3:30 p.m. on every third Saturday of the month, beginning this weekend. This is in addition to regular Story Time every Thursday at 10 a.m. and 11:30.

In Steamboat Sailor Golf, Michael Dinapoli and Charlie Reisman both made the Western Slope All-Conference Golf team. Reece Hoy and Finn Chapman were Honorable Mention. And the Sailors won the Western Slope Regional Tournament.
