A group has started a petition to get the Brown Ranch Annexation to a vote. You must be a registered voter in the City of Steamboat Springs to sign. City Council voted last week to not let Brown Ranch go to a vote. The petition will need 1,200 validated signatures by Nov. 17.

The big Sandrock Star overlooking the city of Craig is up and ready to go. Dale Updike was there this weekend with a group from the Upper Big Gulch Better Community Club.

“It’s just a local club of a bunch of old ranchers here in town.”

The star is about 20’ and it is perched way up so that everyone can see it, along the sandrocks on the north side of Craig.

“Last year when the took it down, the lights were getting pretty bad. So it’s got 12 strings of brand new LED lights on it, so it ought to be brighter than normal this year.”

The Jaycees in Craig first put the star up in 1963. When they disbanded in the 70s, it wasn’t lit. In the 90s, the Upper Big Gulch Better Community Club, decided to relight it so they built a new frame, and got permission to put it up on the sandrock.

“We just did it for the town of Craig, just to help give the town of Craig something to ooh and aah over at Christmastime.”

The Sandrock Star should be turned on around Thanksgiving, usually during the Parade of Lights, for the holidays and for the winter. The Craig Parade of Lights is at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25.
