Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Introduces New Cross Country Ski Program for Adults

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club announced this week a new cross country program for adults this winter, Tuesdays and Thursdays from December 13, 2023, to February 28, 2024. Responding to requests for group sessions for adults, SSWSC has created a program to bring together cross country skiers for fun and fitness and to build community around a lifelong sport. All levels are welcome—adult skiers hoping to pick up some basic tips, cyclists using skiing to build fitness throughout the winter, or experienced competitive skiers training for the next Birkebeiner.

“We’ve had requests for an adult cross country ski training group at Howelsen for years, so we are excited to get started,” said SSWSC Athletic Director Dave Stewart. “This sport is much more fun if you can meet up with some training partners and get coaching on technique and training. The coaches we have lined up have not only competed and coached at the highest levels, they also bring a lifetime of experience in the sport and a passion for sharing their love for skiing with others. This is going to be fun!”

The coaching lineup, a star-studded cast of former World Cup skiers, SSWSC coaches, and Olympians will include David Norris (2023 and 2016 American Birkebeiner Champion, 2023 World Championship team member), Jessica Yeaton (2022 and 2018 Olympian, 2020 American Birkebeiner Champion), Josh Smullin (SSWSC Head Coach, CU Ski Team Alum), Brian Tate (SSWSC Cross Country Program Director), plus guest coaches from our community.

Some skiing experience is required, as well as the ability to ski in easy to moderate terrain—adults age twenty years of age or older. Skiers will need their own skate or classic equipment; 75 percent of the sessions will be skate skiing. There will be some classic skiing sessions offered, and skiers participating on those days will need waxable classic skis. Howelsen Hill cross country pass is required. The program runs from December 13 – February 28 (no sessions December 23 – January 5 or February 22-23), Tuesdays, noon-1:15 p.m., and Thursdays, 6-7:15 p.m., Howelsen Lodge. The total program cost for the entire season is $50.
