Steamboat Police are reporting thefts from vehicles, at least seven in the last couple of days, mostly around Cherry Drive and in Steamboat II. All vehicles were unlocked according to Sgt. Sam Silva with the Steamboat Springs Police Department. They are investigating.
From News Director Shannon Lukens: My dad was always very adamant with the nine of us kids about locking your car doors, so I called him on Easy 94-1 Monday afternoon. Here is some free advice from 89-year-old Charlie Luthy in Canton, Illinois.
As much as I talk about locking your car doors because of the bears, it just isn’t sinking in so I’ll let my dad do the talking.

Living with Wolves and How to avoid Wildlife Conflicts is the name of the new flyer released by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, to soon be in all CPW offices. The brochure says wolves avoid humans and are unlikely to approach people or homes. But it also has a list of what you should do if you do see a wolf near your house or in the backcountry. That includes make a lot of noise, keep your pets close to home and livestock in sheds or barns, if possible, also carry a big walking stick or bear spray. That full list is on our website.

The City of Steamboat Springs has designated the Veterans Center Building as an historic landmark. The plaque was presented at the Veterans Center, 924 Lincoln Ave., Monday in recognition of the building’s historic and architectural importance to the City of Steamboat Springs.
Erica Hewitt is doing the design and the architectural work on the renovation and is an Historical Preservation Consultant with the city.
“It’s a huge piece of history and part of the history of the development of Steamboat Springs as one of the J.W. Hugus buildings and his store. And then enter the VFW and they have had this building for a long time and this is a special part of Steamboat continuing the development of Steamboat and the veterans here in town.”
J.W. Hugus built the building as a general store in 1899, and it was also the second bank in Steamboat Springs. It has also been a roller rink, a bowling alley, an auto body shop and more. The VFW purchased it in 1948. They’re trying to raise $3M to make it a community center.

The National Finals Rodeo starts this Thursday in Las Vegas. Hayden’s Keenan Hayes will be there competing as number one in the world in Bareback Riding. It’s ten days of competition, and for Hayes, it’s done eight seconds at a time, on the back of a horse.
“I’m just excited to go into the finals for the first time. I’ve been watching and going there for the last ten years or so and just watching. This year will be a lot different getting to go and ride.”
Hayes is leading the world in Bareback Riding, having earned almost $266,000 so far this season, which is a record for season earnings. He’s only 20 years old, almost 21.
“January 3rd so I just miss it. That’s a good thing. Keep me out of trouble, hopefully.”
The National Finals Rodeo is the premier rodeo event by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, showcasing the top 15 money winners in the season, in each event.
