Everyone is now back in school after Winter Break. Students in Moffat County, Hayden, and Soroco started Monday. Those three districts are on the four-days a week school schedule. Kids in the Steamboat Springs School District are back in school Tuesday, so expect a bit more traffic during pickup and dropoff times.

The Steamboat Springs School District Board of Education meets at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Steamboat Springs Middle School. Meeting Agenda

A presentation will be given on the Butcherknife Creek Restoration Project, which is scheduled to happen this summer and fall.

Butcherknife presentation

Bennett Colvin is the Environmental Science teacher at Steamboat Springs High School. He is coordinating the project with Jeff Ruff.

“Currently our students have been acting as fish and marine biologists and looking how to test water quality and look at the macro invertebrates and the fish and all of the riparian habitat out of our river. And we’re going to get to see how doing a river restoration project with will affect the biodiversity so it should be really really cool and we’re really excited.”

The Butcherknife Creek Project is right behind Steamboat Springs Middle School and Strawberry Park Elementary. A company called Fly Water out of Fort Collins will come in to do the river restoration work. Students from all of the schools will be helping with tree planting, signage, monitoring the creek, and outreach. Colvin hopes it will create a prime learning space at the schools for years to come.

Also supporting the project are the Yampa Valley Stream Improvement Charitable Trust, Trout Unlimited, and the school district.
