It is a SNOW DAY today, something that hasn’t happened in decades. No school for the Steamboat Springs School District, SoRoCo School District, and no in-person classes at CMC. Hayden School District does not have school. Steamboat Christian Academy and Steamboat Montessori also have a Snow Day. Steamboat Mountain School doesn’t have school. The Boys & Girls Club of Steamboat Springs will be closed Thursday.
Check with your school in the other districts in NW Colorado if you aren’t sure.
From Steamboat Springs School District Superintendent Dr. Celine Wicks:
From CMC-Steamboat Campus Dean JC Norling:
Good evening Steamboat Campus,
In an unprecedented situation Steamboat Springs School District (SSSD) is closing the schools on Thursday, January 18.
To be in sync with SSSD, CMC Steamboat Campus will be closed as well, Thursday, January 18th.
I understand a campus closure is complicated, but after discussion with SSSD, campus leaders, and with Matt Gianneschi this seem like the prudent thing to do.
Here is the list of items that pertain to academic and student services, facilities, and food service.
- In person classes at the campus will be cancelled
- Remote real time classes will be held as planned
- Staff are encouraged to work remotely, or may choose to go into their office
- If you have any questions please work directly with your supervisor
- Sodexo should plan on serving meals to students
- The buildings will be open and locked on regular hours so students can access food service
- Facilities will need to ensure proper snow removal
- All scheduled events, such as, club fair will be cancelled
- All community use will be cancelled
- I will send a RAVE Alert that goes to all faculty, staff, and students.
Enjoy the snow!
Hayden School District has canceled classes for Thursday.

Steamboat Christian Academy Students: To ensure the safety of all our families and staff, SCA will have a snow day tomorrow, Thursday 1/18/24. Teachers will send an email with optional assignments for any student wanting something to work on tomorrow. Have a safe and wonderful day!

SNOW DAY IN NORTHWEST COLORADO FOR THURSDAY
19-year-old Isaac Spahn-Mascarenas was in court Wednesday for a bond hearing. He is the man who turned himself in on Tuesday for allegedly crashing into Steamboat Springs High School and causing significant damage last Friday.
Judge Erin Wilson set bond at $3,500 personal recognizance bond, which means he does not have to post the money, unless he breaks his bond conditions or doesn’t show up to his next court date, which is 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30.
District Attorney Matt Karzen said Spahn-Mascarenas has no criminal history and has been living and working in Steamboat Springs for the past two years. He must abide by a protection order and not have any contact with anyone involved with the case, specifically within the Steamboat Springs School District.
Routt County Board of County Commissioners are having a work session this coming Monday, to discuss the permitting and approval process for large special events. An example would be the SBT GRVL ride.
The permit under review that needs approval says the large events can have no more than 3,000 participants. It lists how many Routt County miles are affected. It also says riders and runners need to stay in single or double file and as far right as possible on the road when there is traffic. It says vehicular traffic has the right of way unless a uniformed police officer stops traffic and waves the participants through. Non-compliance by participants could result in cancelation or ineligibility of future permits.
The new plan also includes a plan from event organizers on how to handle traffic, how event organizers will let people know about the event, and what signage will be used. The permit also requests a Sanitation Plan, with locations of trash receptacles and toilets, and then when it will be mitigated after the event.
The work session starts at 1 p.m. in the Commissioners’ hearing room in the historic Routt County Courthouse in downtown Steamboat Springs.
The new rules come after rural Routt County residents have been expressing frustrating with the SBT GRVL ride and how it affects their homes and travel and ranching.
