The School Board voted on it unanimously tonight, to have the first Girls Softball Team at the high school in the fall. Parents and future players were there, cheering on the decision, which was brought up to the Moffat County School Board last November.

Moffat County High School Principal Ryan Frink told the board that 13 girls are confirmed to be on the team and 25 more are interested. This includes a lot of 8th graders headed up to the high school in the fall.

The team will also welcome softball players from the region, in case their schools don’t have a team, like Hayden and Steamboat Springs. They’ll also welcome players from Meeker, if they want to play for the Bulldogs.

The Colorado High School Activities Association says to start a sport at a school, it has to be competitive with a strong interest with long-term potential growth. And it has to be a sanctioned sport by CHSAA. It is, with 3A, 4A, and 5A level teams. There were 59 teams in the 3A division last year. The Western Slope League has seven teams. Now there will be eight. Meeker is the closest team to Craig.

The softball games will be played at the Craig Middle School ball fields. The fields are being redone to be able to be used for softball and baseball.

Principal Frink said the team will need $10,000 for equipment the first year. He said parent groups and the community are committing to raising half of that in partnership with the school district. Funding for the team can be done because the Moffat County High School Athletic Department removed Boys and Girls Swimming at the school.

If you want to donate to support the inaugural year of Moffat County Girls Softball, reach out to Principal Frink at ryan.frink@moffatsd.org  Be specific in the donation, that it is to the Girls Softball Team.
