Glen Shaffer Junior of Craig was sentenced in Routt County District Court Wednesday. There were two sentences, one from last summer for theft and burglary, among other charges, and that sentencing was earlier this month. Then there was an incident at the jail where Shaffer broke out windows in the jail on Feb. 18, causing at least $38,358.19 in damages. Judge O’Hara ordered Shaffer to pay restitution, and go to the Colorado Department of Corrections for five years total followed by five years of probation.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials met with local ranchers from throughout Northwest Colorado for a discussion on wolves Wednesday night. Area Wildlife Manager Kris Middledorf answered many of the rancher’s questions on what to do if a wolf injures or kills their livestock, and how they can help prevent that from happening.

“It was a really good meeting tonight, Shannon. All of our community, our livestock producers coming here tonight to talk about wolf restoration and talk about how we can minimize conflict, but really, we’re going to have to do it together and I appreciate our community for being here tonight with us.”

The meeting was organized by the Routt County 4H Extension office. Director Todd Hagenbuch told the crowd at the Community Center in Steamboat Springs that they have been put in a contentious situation so he wanted the meeting to provide education, adding that ranchers are resilient, and all will have to work together to figure out how to get through the wolf reintroduction. We’ll have more on that meeting on our website on Thursday.

CPW has a Wolf Tracking Map that is released monthly. It came out Thursday. This is for the 12 collared wolves in Colorado. It does not show specifics, but rather a watershed area where a wolf may have been. The new territory is much bigger than last month’s. Wolf collar data confirms the two wolves that traveled from western Routt County into eastern Moffat County. The map also now includes parts of Rio Blanco, Garfield, Eagle, Summit, Grand, and most of Jackson County.

The Moffat County Board of County Commissioners has adopted a resolution that says it is a non-sanctuary county. This is in response to the potential for illegal immigrants to be bused to Craig and Moffat County from cities like Denver. Commissioner Tony Bohrer says Moffat County doesn’t have the resources.

“We don’t have the ability or the resources to help a big influx of immigrants. We just don’t have it. We don’t have enough resources to help the people in our own community let alone a bunch come from outside.”

Moffat County Commissioners are also sending a letter to the Mayor of Denver to let him know they are a non-sanctuary county as well.

Nathan Butler has announced that he is running for House District 26 in the Colorado House of Representatives in November 2024. Butler is a resident of Craig in Moffat County. HD26 includes Routt, Moffat, Rio Blanco, and most of Eagle counties. His opponent is incumbent Meghan Lukens of Steamboat Springs.

The Steamboat Sailors Hockey Team sadly, lost their state playoff game last night, in double overtime.
