Two students from SoRoCo High School testified at the state capitol in Denver Thursday. Trevor Hagenbuch and Tim Bedell testified in front of the Colorado State House of Representatives Education Committee about Senate Bill 24-014, which would implement a Seal of Climate Literacy on high school diplomas in the State of Colorado. SoRoCo Superintendent Kirk Henwood was also there.
Also from SoRoCo High School, senior Carmen Anarella has been selected as an initial winner of the Boettcher Scholarship from the Boettcher Foundation. This scholarship honors and recognizes Colorado’s top students with funds for in-state education and beyond. Carmen’s scholarship offer is $20K per year for four years. To Carmen:

The regional competition for the National Civics Bee was this week, hosted by the Craig Chamber of Commerce. It’s a live quiz about civics knowledge for middle school students. The first-place winner for the local competition is Ryun P. from Craig Middle School. Second place is Elliot S. from Steamboat Springs Middle School and third place was Gracie F. who is homeschooled. Ryun won $500 for first place. All three finalists will compete in the statewide competition.

Also in Moffat County, Sheriff KC Hume gave the annual Employee Awards. Those recognized are Deputy Brandon Montoya, Food Service Director Isabel Dieckhoff, Sergeant Matt Hammer and Deputy Brad McDermott. Also honored was former Deputy Dave Vialpando for his dedicated years of service.
The First Friday K-8 Student Art Show is at the Steamboat Art Museum at 8th and Lincoln. Opening night is from 5-8 p.m. tonight. students from Strawberry Park Elementary, Soda Creek Elementary, Sleeping Giant School, and Steamboat Springs Middle School will have their artwork exhibited. The show will be on display in the SAM library through April 11.
This is the last full weekend of “Wild West: Wildlife Masters, Past and Present,” at Steamboat Art Museum. It runs through April 13.
Saturday, April 6, is Take Your Child to the Library Day in Craig. Stop by the Craig branch at 570 Green Street between noon and four. Families get a free book bag and kids get a free book while supplies last. Celebrate the Library!

The band on Saturday for the Bud Light Rocks the Boat Free Concert Series is The Goonies. That’s on the stage in Steamboat Square at the base of the resort, starting around 3:30 p.m. Saturday and it is also free.

Five Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Freeski athletes have qualified to compete in the International Freeskier & Snowboarder Association (IFSA) Junior Championships in Breckenridge, April 7-14. They are Cooper Malia, Ellie Reynolds, Mason Stewart, Oscar Dalzell and Riley McNew. The Junior Championships will host 370 skiing and snowboarding athletes from the United States, Canada, Argentina, and Chile. It is the first time it has been hosted in the Rocky Mountain Region.
Here are their rankings for North and South America.
- U15 Men Snowboard – Cooper Malia, ranked 1st out of 92 athletes in that division,
- U19 Women Skier – Ellie Reynolds, ranked 17th out of 306 athletes in that division,
- U15 Men Skier – Mason Stewart, ranked 53rd out of 935 athletes in that division, and
- U15 Men Skier – Oscar Dalzell, ranked 63rd out of 935 athletes in that division.
- U19 Women Snowboard — Riley McNew, ranked 18th in her division.
