As the snow melts, waterways are riding. Sand stations are being set up in Steamboat Springs at Stehley Park and Short & James streets. The city streets division will provide sand and sandbags as needed, but the homeowner has to fill them up and place them.

The nomination process has opened up to be on the board of Yampa Valley Electric. It’s a three-year term. Director Districts up for election this year are District 1 from Baggs and Savery, Wyoming, District 8 from Steamboat Springs, and District 9 representing Yampa, Toponas, and Bond. The nominating petition is on the YVEA website.

 

A statewide survey is out, asking voters what they want to see and hear in this year’s election process. Steamboat Radio and KRAI News are participating. That survey link is on our website and social media pages.

Billy Kidd is celebrating 60 years since he won a silver medal in the Olympics. He met fans, took pictures, and showed off that silver medal and a World Championship gold at The Range at the base of Steamboat Resort last night. And everyone there sang Happy Birthday to Billy Kidd, who turns 81 tomorrow.

Megan Walker Karschner has been named the new executive director of the Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition. Karschner has lived and worked in the Yampa Valley for the past 15 years.

Moffat County School District has named Maggie Bruski as the new Executive Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. She is currently with Northwest Colorado BOCES and will start July 1.

Members of the Ute Tribe from the Uintah and Ouray Reservations performed at schools this week in Steamboat Springs, as guests of the Tread of Pioneers Museum. Reffel Kanip is half Northern Ute and half Ute Mountain Ute from Fort Duchesne, Utah.

“If everybody could understand one another, understand their ancient ways and be good with each other, they could put the earth back on its original axis. Right now, the weather is going crazy and stuff. Maybe God, the creators, and Mother Earth is not agreeing with it, so if we are all together as one nation and one person we can all just come together and put everything aside and just naturally put the earth back to where it is supposed to be and go from there.”

The tribal members performed dances and told of their regalia at local schools. Kanip ended the evening thanking everyone for taking care of the White River Territory.

“Thank you to the white people. You are doing a good job taking care of the White River Territory. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

The Steamboat Symphony Orchestra is performing at 7 p.m. tonight and tomorrow night at the Strings Music Festival tent.

The 42nd Annual Cardboard Classic is starts at 11:30 Saturday on the Stampede Run at the base of Steamboat Resort.

 

 

The Splashdown Pond Skim starts at 1 p.m. on Sunday also at the base.

 

The concert lineup for the Bud Light Rocks The Boat Free Concert Series is The Lil Smokies on Saturday and The Wailers on Sunday. The free concert starts around 3:30 p.m. at the base of Steamboat Resort.

 

Curling teams are competing at Howelsen Ice Arena in Steamboat Springs tonight and tomorrow. This is the Steamboat Springs Mountain Town Bonspiel team, bringing curling teams in from throughout Colorado to compete.

 

The Pop-Up Indoor Bounce House Center at the Routt County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall in Hayden is there tonight through Sunday.

 

The back parking lot at Old Town Hot Springs is closed today through next Tuesday for utility work in the alley along the lot there. Please do not park in the Post Office parking lot either.

 

Steamboat Springs High School’s Science Olympiad Team finished fourth overall in the 2024 Colorado tournament at UC Colorado Springs on April 6.

Steamboat Springs High School recently took 4th place overall in the 2024 Colorado Science Olympiad State Tournament. The middle school team also took 13 students to the competition.
