Get rid of fees for P.O. Boxes for those residents who have no other way of getting their mail. That’s the message from U.S. Senators John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet, and U.S. Representative Joe Neguse. They have again written a letter to US Postal Service (USPS) officials in the Colorado-Wyoming District Office to get it done, specifically for the Steamboat Springs residents who keep having to pay.

The letter references that back in November 2023, USPS officials said eligible residents wouldn’t have to pay anymore and they’d get a refund, as frequently reported on Steamboat Radio News.

Now the lawmakers are reminding postal officials to get it done. Don’t charge a fee anymore and provide those refunds for up to 24 months, as they said they would. The letter also says that it’s been six months, and residents are still saying they have to pay and there’s no date on when they can expect that refund.

The bridge at Fish Creek Falls is closed through July 1. It is blocked off with a sign. No one is allowed to walk on it or cross it. Aaron Voos with the U.S. Forest Service says it is because of continued issues with stability of the bridge for the last two seasons. There are sandbags there from last year, but they haven’t been able to do a permanent fix yet.

“As of July 1, we’ll take a look at it to see if we need to limit the number of people on there. There will be continual evaluations in place. The main point here is that until July 1, no traffic on the bridge. After that, we anticipate it being open but there may be some limitations in place.”

Fines for crossing the closed bridge could be as high as $5,000 for individuals or $10,000 for groups. The seasonal closures of April 1 through July 1 will be in place through 2027 until a permanent fix is in place earlier.
