(UPDATED) The body of a 46-year-old man from El Paso County who drowned Sunday has been recovered from Bear Lake south of Yampa. That’s according to the Garfield County Coroner Monday morning. Routt County Sheriff Doug Scherar says the sheriff’s office and Routt County Search and Rescue were also at the scene to assist.

A 26-year-old man from Orem, Utah, died in a single vehicle crash early Saturday morning. The Moffat County Coroner has identified him as Luke Stark. Colorado State Patrol says Stark was on his way to visit his parents in Steamboat Springs when the car he was driving drifted off the edge of the road on Hwy 40 just east of Craig at Mile Marker 93.4. Colorado State Patrol says the call came in at 3:56 a.m., but they think they crash happened about an hour before. Emergency personnel arrived at 4:20 a.m.

Saturday was a gathering of around 70 people on the Gittleson Ranch in Jackson County. This is where wolves have killed more cattle than anywhere else in Colorado. State legislators were there along with many ranchers and producers from Northwest Colorado, media from throughout Colorado, Routt County Sheriff Doug Scherer, and top officials with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. They were all there to listen and learn how wolf reintroduction is affecting the ag community, in a non-confrontational setting.

After a ranch tour with Don Gittleson, CPW Director Jeff Davis answered questions.

“This meeting was great. I’m so glad that the Gittlesons hosted us. It’s so important to CPW with all of what’s going on that we are here to listen and understand and try to create some durable solutions with the ranching community and the rest of Colorado’s residents.”

The painting of stripes on roads throughout Steamboat Springs begins today. These are the double yellow and the white shoulder stripes. It should be finished by Friday, if the weather cooperates. Also, crew will be working at night in the roundabout at Steamboat Blvd., and Mount Werner Circle. The road will be grooved and then painted so the markings last longer and stay visible over the winter. Please don’t cross over any freshly painted lines.

The second half of property taxes are due today. In Moffat County, pay in the treasurer’s office at the courthouse. In Routt County, also pay at the treasurer’s office in the historic Routt County courthouse downtown. You can also pay online, but Moffat County adds a 3% fee when using a credit card. There is also a secure 24-hour dropbox there in the alley.

The Steamboat Springs School District Board of Education meets at 4 p.m. today at the middle school. New graduation requirements will continue to be discussed for Steamboat Springs High School. Those requirements would start with the Class of 2027. Agenda

A Town Hall with Senator Dylan Roberts of Senate District 8 and Representative Meghan Lukens of House District 26 is at noon Monday at the Rangely Town Hall, and also at 5 p.m. Monday at the Meeker Public Library. They’ll discuss the 2024 Post-Legislative Session.

The track at Steamboat Springs High School was busy this week with Track and Field camp. There were 170 Kindergarten through 9th grade athletes, with over 35 high school and college athletes, who are alumni to SSHS, helping coach the kids. Lisa Renee Tumminello runs the popular camp. She says the Athletes of the Week were awarded Chick ‘n Legs Shorts. They are Charlee Shaw and James Pritchard, “for stepping up with such courage, determination, and grit!”

Guerin Lewis has released a new music video called, “When a Cowgirl Goes to Heaven.” It’s a tribute to his sister, Lacey Lewis of Steamboat Springs, who was killed by a woman with multiple drugs in her system, in Parker two years ago today, June 16.
