Fencing has now gone up and the collapsed metal building along the Core Trail is coming down. It’s the one behind The Depot Arts Center in Steamboat Springs. Demolition crews are working there this week.
The building is owned by Union Pacific. It collapsed in March of 2023.
A sign on the fencing says, “Danger – Asbestos,” and that the area is for authorized personnel only.

Another vehicle at the site said “Mold – Asbestos – Lead.”
We asked a worker at the site about the demolition and he said most of the work will be done this week.
We also reached out to Union Pacific and who confirmed Wednesday afternoon, “Demolition work has indeed begun on that building.”
We have been regularly checking in about the building, and about the old railroad ties stacked up and lying along the tracks from Milner to Phippsburg. They were replaced last fall. The last communication from Union Pacific about the railroad ties was that the ties will be picked up this month.
