The Yampa River is closed for all summer recreational activities. This means tubing, fishing, swimming, and paddleboarding. Water temperatures have gone up to over 75 degrees for the past two days, which prompted the closure for all commercial and recreational river use. The river will stay closed until showers and thunderstorms can cool things off.

A new recycling program for plastic polypropylene baling twine is available in Routt County. The twine is used to tie bundles of hay. Producers can bring discarded plastic twine to Elk River Pet & Ranch off County Road 129 at Copper Ridge Circle in Steamboat Springs. Two bins are outside.

Laura Tyler is running the Community Twine Recycling nonprofit. She says it can save producers on landfill fees.

“But it also protects wildlife and birds. Wildlife and even domestic livestock can sometimes eat the twine and die. Sometimes birds put it in their nests and they can strangle on it. So it protects wildlife quite a bit.”

The twine recycling program was started with a grant from the Craig-Scheckman Family Foundation and Blaise and Leslie Carrig Charitable Fund. More information is at TwineRecycling.com
